Joe Sims
Regional Vice President
Sportservice
Like so many others, Joe Sims came to Delaware North early in his career and never left. He started out as a runner and porter in 1981with Sportservice at Cincinnati’s old Riverfront Stadium. He always knew he didn’t want to be stuck in an office environment and he thrived on the excitement and pace of the business.
A few years later, he was recognized for being ‘handy’ and the general manager of that stadium began turning to him to do miscellaneous repairs of the beer dispensing system, refrigeration units and anything else that needed fixing. His willingness and ability to do extra tasks earned him a promotion to a maintenance worker.
During slow times, Joe took the initiative to help out in the main warehouse, moving stock for the commissary manager. He got involved and wanted to learn more about the business.
Joe was recognized for his initiative and desire to learn. A few years later, he was promoted to a management trainee. It normally takes one year to complete the program, but with Joe’s eagerness and hard work, he completed the program in six months.
Through the years, Joe held various other positions, such as assistant manager at Riverfront Stadium, operations manager at a racetrack in Alabama, operations manager back at Riverfront Stadium, and general manager of Cinergy Field and Great American Ball Park, the former and current home of the Cincinnati Reds. Shortly after Nation’s Restaurant News named him one of the top 50 operators in the country, Joe was promoted to regional vice president for Sportservice, his current position.
Joe’s advice to any new employee is, “There are no ceilings in Delaware North. If you work hard, you can achieve any position you desire. You just have to believe and, by all means, stay true to yourself.”
